Why Hard Work And Effort ALONE Won’t Make You Successful

Why Hard Work And Effort ALONE Won’t Make You Successful

Have you ever stopped and wondered why most people who work the longest hours and have the most physically demanding jobs many times make the least amount of money?

It’s strange isn’t it? After all, we all learned that hardwork is the key to success, right? Well, that’s wrong because many times all hard work leads to is burn out, frustration and a total lack of freedom.

Like many people, I grew up in a blue collar household. My Dad consistently worked 3 jobs at a time and my Mum slaved away at a job she hated for 40 years.

We never took vacations and we rarely spent money on “nice” things.

On the flip side, I had friends who always seemed to go on family vacations and for the longest time, I couldn’t understand what was different about their situation over ours.

Fast forward to today and after many years spent repeating the same “work hard equals money” mindset I grew up with (which is a broken one) and not getting anywhere, I now have the simple shift in thinking that changes the game and I’m going to share it with you.

My new mindset which has shifted my business came from the guidance of my coach, Jim Fortin, and everything you’re about to learn today was taught to me during a private 3-month coaching experience.

It’s also the same strategies used by the world’s richest people who use it to build real wealth and impact millions all while setting themselves free from “the daily grind” of work.

As a hint, none of what I’m about to tell you will require any effort on your part, so sit back, relax and enjoy the next few minutes, because everything you’re about to learn will change your life and business forever!

Let’s Start With The Magnet In Your Brain

Have you ever bought something that you were proud to own and afterwards for some reason you just kept seeing it everywhere?

And have you ever wondered why this happens?

What if I told you that you actually have a built-in magnet inside your brain called the reticular activating system (RAS) and its job is to look for the things that you find interesting?

Well, it’s true and it exists in this part of your brain (highlighted in red).

The RAS is a network of nerves that connect your spinal cord to your brain

The RAS is a network of nerves that connect your spinal cord to your brain

As we evolved, its purpose was to help us recognize patterns in our environment.

For example, our brain knows that eating blueberries is a good thing. So as we walked around our environment our brain could automatically look for and detect the color blue without using too much brain power or energy.

In other words, it’s an automatic survival mechanism.

Today, we still have that same mechanism, which is always looking to keep us alive and it bases this decision making on one thing and one thing alone…

If you perceive/interpret that the only way to be successful is to work hard and put in more effort, then your RAS will look for evidence of this to be true.

This ends up resulting in a strong belief around hard work equals money and now your RAS will go out into the world and search for evidence to prove this to be true…even when it isn’t!

You see, an interpretation isn’t normally a fact. Meaning that what’s true for you, may not be true for me.

There are some things that are fact, like the planets orbit around the sun, but most of the things we believe to be fact are just false perceptions and interpretations of reality and you can change your interpretations at any time – especially your limitations about your business and wealth.

One person may perceive rich people as being greedy, while another person may believe that rich people deserve to be rich because they helped a lot of people.

Both could be true, but only one will serve you if you are looking to get rich (hint: it’s not the first one!)

Changing Your Interpretations, Change Your Business!

So how do you adjust your interpretations of things if they aren’t serving you?

One of the things that Jim taught me in our coaching together was a simple 4-step strategy for adjusting my perception and interpretations of something if it wasn’t serving me.

This 4- step process can be done throughout your day and requires no effort, and it will immediately shift you.

  1. When you’re stuck or feeling bad acknowledge that it’s only a perception/interpretation.
  2. Come up with 5-7 new and positive interpretations of your problem.
  3. Pick the new interpretation that serves you the most

For example, if my perception is that the only way to make more money is to work longer hours and it’s no longer serving me, the first step is to acknowledge that this could be or not be a true statement. Specifically, it’s my interpretation, because others who make a lot of money very well have an opposite interpretation.

This first realization automatically puts you immediately into a more open frame of mind to start the exercise.

The next step is to uncover some other examples of how you could interpret the problem.

For example, if our value was related to the number of hours we work in a single day, then someone like Jeff Bezos would have had to produce $4.5 million worth of productivity every hour without any sleep or time off in all of 2017.

Doesn’t seem very realistic does it?

Now attempt to come up with 3-7 other examples of how else you could perceive the situation.

The final step is to identify the one way of perceiving things that serves you the most moving forward.

This is something you can repeat over and over again throughout the day with no effort or brainpower.

The 24 Hour Perception Challenge

Here’s my challenge to you.

For the next 24 hours only, I want you to acknowledge all of your negative beliefs as they come up and when they do, follow the 4-step process mentioned above.

Then at the end of the day, take note of what happened.

Did opportunities arise that you weren’t expecting?

Maybe you felt like you had more energy?

Maybe you got more work done than usual?

Take note of what happened and drop it in the comments below.
