So, you’ve got this brand you’ve been building for the last few months, hell, maybe even years, but no matter what you do you just can’t seem to figure out how to get more website traffic and turn that business into a success.

What’s even more annoying is other people in your space seem to have no problem getting tons of traffic, landing sweet interviews and owning the spotlight in popular FB groups.

Cue the urge to day-drink!

I mean, let’s be real here…

The online space is getting bigger and noisier, and it can be hard to make a splash and increase your website traffic when you’re first starting out.

Fortunately it’s not impossible.

And since one of our main jobs here at the Screw is to get our brand “out there”, we’ve learned a thing or two about how to get more website traffic and turn those browsers into buyers.

How To Get More Website Traffic

Here’s the thing…

When it comes to getting targeted traffic to your site, you have two options:

1. Pay for it (and be at the mercy of rising ad costs)


2. Create a rock-solid (and SEO friendly) content marketing strategy that will build free, organic traffic for months and years to come.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m feelin’ the free web traffic option!

What’s more is it’s not hard to do if you have a simple framework to follow.

Thankfully, we’ve got a ruthlessly-effective strategy (and a rockin’ FREE Traffic Workshop) that gets your content ranking on Google, attracts the right kind of traffic, engages your audience and gets the word out there on you and your business in a big way.

Best of all, it doesn’t involve you sitting at your computer for hours on end trying to game the system.

It all starts with…

Step 1: Tracking

Straight up? If you don’t know what to track when it comes to growing your site traffic, you’re likely going to assume “it’s not working”, get frustrated and give up.

And we don’t want that.

Instead, focus on only tracking these 3 simple metrics that will allow you to see what is working (so you can do more of it) and what’s not (so you can cut it)!

“Only THREE things? Shouldn’t I be tracking more?” is what I assume you just said in your head.

Short answer?


At least not in the beginning.

Instead, get laser focused on these 3 metrics, master them and then gradually add in additional metrics once you’ve got your system down.

Oh, and before we dive in I should tell you…

I’m going to be using one our other websites (from our publishing business), as the example site throughout this section.

That way you can see everything in action as we move through the steps.

So what are these 3 metrics?

Track It: Weekly Audience

The first thing you need to track when it comes to measuring your traffic stats is your weekly audience, also known as your unique users.

And the reason we track this is simple: We want to see week to week if our traffic is increasing or decreasing.

Pretty straightforward, right?

To do this, sign into your Google Analytics account and on the left-hand sidebar click on “audience” and then in the dropdown, click on “overview”.

From there, click on the date option and choose the last 7 days.

You can even get extra crafty and create a comparison that will show you in graph form if your traffic increased, decreased or stayed the same.

Remember, don’t make this too complicated.

Simply track your unique users week to week to get a clear look at how your traffic efforts are paying off.

Okay, so now that you’ve got your weekly unique users down, it’s time to get our second metric set up.

What is it?

Track It: Weekly Behavior

Fun fact: Google is the #1 referrer of website traffic today.

And one of the big things they look at when determining how to rank pages on a website is their website behavior.

This comes down to a few things:

  • Are people interacting with your website?
  • Are people spending more than a few seconds or a couple minutes on your site?
  • Are they engaging with your website?

If your site ticks those imaginary boxes, chances are they are going to deem your site as quality and rank you higher, ultimately resulting in more site traffic.


So, what makes up your website behavior?

  1. Bounce Rate: This is the percentage of users that leave your site immediately (the lower, the better)
  2. Average Time on Page: This is the average time a user spends on one of your pages (the higher, the better)
  3. Pages per Session: This is the average number of pages viewed per user (the more, the better)

Where do you find these stats?

Again, looking at your left sidebar, click on “behavior” and then on “overview” to get a look at these stats.

But before you dive into your dashboard, let’s jam on the third and final metric.

Track It: Weekly Search

Lemme guess: You’ve heard search traffic is “dead”.

I hear this all. the. time and it could not be further from the truth.

In fact, Google is still the #1 referrer of online traffic and it’s continuing to increase.

Another bonus of search traffic?

It’s targeted traffic which means the people coming to your site through specific search phrases and keywords are looking for exactly what you have to say and sell.

And my ultimate favourite reason for focusing on organic search traffic is…

*drum roll, please*

Because most people aren’t focusing on it which means there is a huge opportunity for you to shine in this space!

Best of all, getting search traffic to your site is EASY!

So, how do we track our weekly search traffic?

Do this:

On the left sidebar click on “acquisition” and then on “overview” which will bring you to a dashboard that looks like this:

From there, in the dropdown menu click on “search console” and then “landing pages” which will bring you to this page where you can see which pages and keywords people are using to enter your site.

Why does this matter?

Because if people are coming into your site off a topic-specific keyword or phrase, chances are they are interested in learning more about that topic and potentially purchasing a product, program or service which you can promote throughout your content.

Which means it’s helpful for you to know which pages get the most search so you can optimize them for conversions and sales.


Alright, now that you’ve got your 3 metrics to track all sorted, it’s time to move onto the next step…

Step 2: Creating Cornerstone Content

You know how I mentioned a few lines up that targeting search traffic is easy?

Well, in order for it to be easy you have to know what the heck to focus on in order to get that sweet, sweet search traffic flooding into your site.

So allow me to break it down for you!

The best and easiest way we know of for attracting targeted traffic to your site is to create the right kind of content. 

What kind of content is that?

We call it Cornerstone Content.

WTF is Cornerstone Content?

Simply put, Cornerstone Content is a high-impact piece of free content (like a blogpost) that is written around a big topic that can lead to revenue for your business.

It is built around specific keywords (to help you attract targeted website traffic), is in-depth (at least 2,000 words), is better than your competition’s content, can be updated (and re-promoted) and is monetized either through your own offers or through affiliate offers.

Best of all, it’s only created once a month and will drive the majority of your organic website traffic.

So what does Cornerstone Content look like?

Well, the post you’re reading right now is one of our Cornerstone pieces.

As is this post, this post, this post aaaannnnd this post!

And while there is a system to creating it (which we break down in this free workshop and deep-dive into inside 90 Day Traffic), the steps can be broken down into 3 stages.

What are they?

1: Identify Your Topic

Good news: Uncovering the topics for your Cornerstone posts should be easy!


Because you likely already have an idea of the main topics your audience wants to learn about in your niche.

So to start, grab a piece of paper (or, you know, open up a Google Doc) and list out all the major topics related to your niche that encompass the main interest areas (or pain points) your audience wants to learn more about or solve.

Pretty straightforward, right?

“Yeah but how do I know if I’m choosing the RIGHT topic?” is what I assume you’re now thinking.

Here are 3 ways to tell if your topic is suitable for Cornerstone Content:

  1. The topic gets search traffic (confirm this with the Google Keyword Tool)
  2. People are already buying products and services related to that topic
  3. It is 100% relevant to your niche

Once you have chosen your topic it’s time to…

2. Create Your Table of Contents

Now, this may sound unnecessary, but trust me it will make it sooooo much easier to create your Cornerstone piece if you have a structure to follow.


Because it allows you to map out the main points you want to hit (ie. your chapters) and helps you brainstorm what you’ll say and the main outcome you want to achieve inside each chapter—ultimately making it wildly helpful for your future readers!

Plus, and this is a biggie, Google loves well structured content that makes use of different heading tags and smart keyword selection!

This chapter process allows you to cater to their preferences easily and efficiently.

Now, do you have to create allllll the chapters?


Instead, aim for 4 – 7 chapters to keep things readable and easily digestible!

Just make sure you identify relevant keywords to use for both your chapter titles and within the content itself.

This will help attract even more organic search traffic as you’ll be speaking to a variety of search phrases.

Then once you’ve got your chapters laid out, it’s time to…

3. Write Your Post

Yep, it’s time to sit that (cute) butt down, pull up your chapter breakdown, your keyword list and actually create this bad boy!

So, how do it without devoting days and days to writing?

Here’s a quick way to get you started…

First, make a copy of your chapter breakdown that you can use to write in, edit and make necessary changes.

Next, go through the copy of your chapter breakdown and replace your bullet points with flushed out, written content.

Once you have your first draft written, copy and paste it into WordPress, schedule it for a few weeks out, save it, step away from it and edit it the next day.

Then once your piece is good to go, add in relevant images or videos to enhance your post where necessary.

Using this post as an example you’ll see that I’ve included screenshots where necessary to make the post even more helpful to those reading and wanting to implement this strategy.

Finally, once you have everything done, go through your post and add in any relevant links (both external and internal) to any opt-ins, blogposts or offers you have that are relevant to your topic!

Et voila!

Your first piece of Cornerstone Content is done and ready to be promoted!

Step 3: Crafting Community Content

Here’s the thing…

When it comes to growing your website traffic, you need to love on both your new traffic as well as your returning visitors.

Also known as, your audience.

You know, the people who open your emails every week.

The people who comment on your social media posts.

The people who give a damn about what you have to say and sell.

They are the people you need to nurture and infotain on a consistent basis so you can create a loyal audience of believers that will fuel your brand and propel it to bigger heights.

So, how do we do this?

Through Community Content.

Wait. WTAF is Community Content?

Simply put, Community Content is content (think: podcasts, videos or, hell, more blogposts) that is released on the same day and time every week that engages and entertains your audience.

It’s content that lives on your website (not a social media platform), creates a consistent experience (ie. your podcast follows a similar show flow week to week), is published consistently and is promoted internally to your existing audience and across your social platforms each week.

And that consistency part?

It’s the most important piece of this step.


Because, let’s be honest, it’s reeeaaalllly tempting to give up your podcast or web show when it feels like no one is listening, am I right?

Instead of stopping though, this is where you power through and stick it out as your audience will grow if you implement this traffic system.


So, how do we create Community Content without being a slave to our content schedule?


We batch.

Here’s how we do it in 2 dead-easy steps…

1. Create A Content Calendar

Ohhh sounds sexy, doesn’t it?

We think so too.

What’s more is this sweet lil’ content calendar system is what allows us to create 12 weeks worth of content in 7 days.

I’m talking: Planning, shooting, editing, uploading, tagging and posting 12 weeks of podcast episodes.

And that’s not all…

It also includes writing all the show notes pages, all the emails and all our social posts for 12 straight weeks.

It’s a pretty baller system.

Now, total transparency, there’s two of us (Josh and myself) so obviously we can divide and conquer.

If you’re currently operating solo, don’t sweat. Start small and commit to batching ONE month of content!

You’ll still be working ahead and it will give you time to figure out your process!

And if it takes you longer than 7 days in the beginning, that’s okay!

The main point is that you have a system that works to batch your content so you can stay consistent and not be at the mercy of an editorial schedule that feels suffocating.

Create yourself a spreadsheet that looks like the screenshot below.

Even the most simplest of content calendars can help you stay organized

From there, start compiling a list of topics you can create quick and consumable content around.

Not sure what topics may resonate?

Ask your audience!

Don’t have an audience or hearing crickets?

Take a look at the topics your competitors are creating content around and use those as inspiration for your own topics!

Or search in relevant Facebook Groups.

Or read the comment threads of popular blogs in your space.

There are tons of ways to brainstorm topic ideas!

Once you’ve got your topics mapped out, use a tool like this blog title generator (that we are uhhhhhb-sessed with!) to help you come up with the headlines for each piece of content you’re going to create.

From there, add your headlines into that first field in the spreadsheet, change your status to “pending”, assign yourself a date you’re going to create it, assign the date it’s going to be published, the general topic category and which type of content it is.

And just like that you’ll have a clear snapshot of the next month (or 3) worth of content you’ll be creating so you don’t get hung up on what to put out there when it’s time to create.

Pretty simple, right?

Alright, so now that you’ve got your content calendar all set up, it’s time to…

2. Batch and Schedule Your Content

Now I’m not gonna lie…

We didn’t always batch our content.

And as a result, our content suffered, we skipped publishing dates, released nothing for weeks on end and lost momentum with our audience.

No bueno.

If you’ve ever struggled for what to say from week to week, this batching system is going to make your life a whole lot easier.

So, why do we batch?

3 reasons really:

  1. Because thinking is hard and batching allows you to get a huge amount of work done in a short amount of time
  2. It allows your brain to focus on ONE task at a time (instead of the constant hamster wheel)
  3. Creates mental white space so you can focus on revenue-generating tasks for the rest of the month

Pretty solid reasons to batch, am I right?

So now let’s talk about HOW to batch.

And this basically breaks down to 3 micro steps:

  1. Research and planning
  2. Content creation
  3. Content scheduling

That’s it.

So let’s jam on each.

Research and Planning

This is simple: Before we create any Community Content we create outlines for each of our episodes.

Why do we do this?

Because it helps us stay on track, on topic and on time.

What’s more is we single-focus on this planning stage and create 12 episode outlines in one fell swoop.

That way when we go to shoot, we can power through and shoot 6 episodes in one day for 2 days and bam! 12 weeks of episodes created in 2 days.

That’s the power of pre-planning your content outlines.

What’s more is we don’t over plan. We simply give ourselves talking points with short explanations for each and we riff.

Now, I know that riffing off the cuff can make some people break out into a sweat, and I get it!

I was one of them.

But here’s the thing you need to know about content creation: It doesn’t have to be PERFECT. It just needs to be published.

Besides, you’ll get better the more and more you do it, so don’t get hung up on perfection, just stick to your content outline and create!

So once we have our content outlines all planned out and ready to go it’s time to…

Create Your Content

Here’s what’s great about this stage of the batching system…

All the pre-planning work is already done for you!

So, basically, all you need to do is show up and create!

Now, Josh deep dives into all things content creation, batching and prepping inside 90 Day Traffic (including giving you our exact Content Creation Procedure to use in your business), but for the sake of blogpost brevity I’ll just say this:

When it comes to creating your content in batches, the biggest key to success with it is sticking to your outline and timeline.

That means not veering too far off your schedule or your content outline, sticking to your plan, creating the best content you can and improving your system during your next mega batch!

That’s it.

Don’t overcomplicate it.

Remember, the more you create, the better you will get.

So don’t stress over it.

Just create it and get it out there!

Which brings me to the third piece of this system…

Schedule Your Content

Good news! This step is stupid-simple and straightforward.

All you gotta do is load up all your posts inside WordPress (or SquareSpace), flush ’em out with any relevant images, videos and descriptions needed to enhance whatever you’re creating, do a quick edit to catch any glaring mistakes, assign a release date and hit “schedule”.

Easy, right?


Alright, now that we’ve got our tracking sorted, we’ve wrapped our heads around Cornerstone Content and we’ve got a sick batching system to create months worth of Community Content in 7 days, it’s time to dive into the fourth and final step…

Step 4: Creating Promotional Content

I’m not gonna lie, this is my favourite form of content we create in our business.


Because it’s not even hosted on our website!

Instead, Promotional Content is content you create for other peoples’ platforms in your space.

What’s more is there are allllll sorts of ways to do this: podcast interviews, guest posting, video interviews, FB Live interviews, features in online publications, virtual summits…

I could go on.

However, while all of those options are rock-solid, there are two types of promotional content we focus on here at the Screw: Podcast interviews (ie. being a guest on someone else’s podcast) and guest posts (writing a blogpost for someone else’s website).

So I’m going to focus on those two for this post and forget the rest.

But first…

Why Does Promotional Content Matter?

The answer to this is simple: If you want to increase website traffic and ramp up your online visibility you need to get in front of audiences who are aligned with what you have to say and sell.

And one of the easiest ways to do that is to collaborate with other websites in your space and serve their audience through dynamic, value-packed interviews and high-impact guest posts.

Another reason?

Because getting on other peoples’ websites helps to build backlinks to your website.

What’s a backlink?

It’s the link you get on someone else’s site that points to yours.

Why do they matter?

Because they essentially tell Google that your website is of high enough quality that other sites are willing to “vouch” for it and link to it.

And this matters because more links equals more authority which equals higher rankings on Google!

So, how do you find these opportunities?

Let’s dive in…

How To Find and Pitch Guest Posts

Now I know you’ve probably heard people suggest this before, but you might not have a solid system for actually finding the sites you can write for.

Which likely means you’re stuck just stabbing in the dark and only approaching sites you know about.

Well, not with this system…

Because with this hack, we’re going to uncover sites you may have never heard of!

Which means you’ll get to open yourself up to a whole new audience.

And that? That is pure organic online visibility, baby!

So, how do we find these opportunities?

1: Run a Smart Search

What’s awesome about this system is that it is so damn easy.

Here’s how it works…

First, do a big ol’ brain dump of all the synonyms related to your niche.

So if I were running a fitness coaching business I would list out words like:

  • weight loss
  • clean eating
  • healthy living
  • at home workouts
  • healthy meal recipes
  • fitness training
  • workout plans
  • weight loss goals

Next, create a second list and jot down specific queries, such as:

  • write for us
  • guest blogger
  • guest post
  • featured guest
  • contribute
  • about the author

Once you have your two lists, open up a Google search and compose your search like this: synonym “query”

Which means your search will look like this: weight loss “write for us” OR healthy living “contribute” OR at home workouts “guest post”…you get the picture.

The most important thing is that you have your synonym NOT in quotes with your query (ie. write for us) IN quotes.

And what this smart search will do is tell Google that you only want to see results from websites that are related to your niche and have the words “write for us” written on the site.

From there, it’s all about the pitch…

2: Pitch Your Post

Ahhh yes, the pitch.

This is where sooooo-ooohhh many people get it wrong.

Trust me, I’ve seen some horrendous outreach!

To avoid this, simply reframe your pitch from being all about you and getting a spot on their site, to being all about them and their audience.

I know it seems obvious, but you would be surprised how many people get it wrong.

And after pitching and writing well over 100 guest posts in my online career (with a 87% success rate), I think I know a thing or two about getting a pitch accepted.

So to help you avoid the dreaded “thanks, but no thanks” reply, I created a simple template for you to use!

Just c & p this script below:

Hi {Name},

I’m {Your Name} and I’ve been a reader of yours for awhile now and really appreciate the content you put out there for your audience!

Your post {title of a post of theirs you enjoyed} really struck a chord with me, especially {a section of their post that resonated with you}!

It was a fantastic read!

I also noticed you accept guest posts and would love the chance to write a post, if you’re still looking for contributors?

If so, I was thinking I could write something for your audience on:

Topic 1

Topic 2

Topic 3

Do you think either of those would be a good fit for {site name or audience name}?

If so, I’d be happy to create something and shoot it over in the next few days.

How To Find and Land Podcast Interviews

Now, this strategy? It’s all about stepping into the spotlight and getting up in their grill.

Who is “they”, you wonder?

All those new audiences you’re going to be exposing yourself to!

Wait…that didn’t sound right.

I don’t mean THAT kind of exposing yourself…

I mean putting yourself out there and being a featured guest on different podcast and video shows.

Now this is actually one of my favourite ways of getting the Screw out there because you get to build credibility, flex your authority muscle and let your personality shine!

But how do you find the different shows or platforms you can grace?


How Do I Find Shows to Be Interviewed On?

Now this one is a bit of a “duh” tip, but if you are ready to get your name out there, there is no better place to start than with podcasts.

I mean, just think about how many interview-based shows are uploaded to iTunes each week.

I bet it’s close to a bazillion. Rough estimate.

What’s more is podcasting is still all the rage and is the perfect medium for you to spread your message.

To find shows in your niche, simply go to the iTunes podcast directory and search through any of the categories that applies to you and your business.

From there, open up the different show pages, look at the left sidebar under “Links” and click on the “podcast website” link.

This will take you directly to that show’s website where you can then search for their contact information and get in touch.

And if for some reason their link isn’t listed, just open up a Google search and search the name.

What’s even cooler about iTunes is they also feature video podcasts.

Ready to get your face out there?

Use this system, but search for video podcasts.

Easy peasy.

And from there it’s a simple process of rinse and repeat.

And while I know this system may seem tedious, I promise you this…

It’s abso-freakin-lutely worth it.

After all, we ain’t here to just build a flash-in-the-pan business that fades out after a couple of years.

Ohhhhh hell no!

Instead, we (me, you, and everyone reading this) are here to build brands that impact our audience and transform their lives.
