How ‘CHASING’ The Freedom Lifestyle Will Keep You Broke and Unhappy

How ‘CHASING’ The Freedom Lifestyle Will Keep You Broke and Unhappy

Do you find yourself chasing the freedom lifestyle?

Wishing you could work from anywhere.

Doing what you want, when you want.

I mean …I can’t be the only one dreaming of sipping margaritas under a palm tree and watching the sunset, while working on my laptop and making money doing what I love.

Crazy thing is… I spent far too long punching the clock, living for the weekends, and trading hours for dollars.

Sound familiar?

But deep down inside I was craving the freedom lifestyle that I saw so many entrepreneurs enjoying.

You know… those multiple 6 and 7 figure entrepreneurs we secretly hate.

Posting their perfectly curated travel photos on IG.

Living their best life.

Making moolah doing it.

Ummm…where can I sign up?

I was desperate for a first class ticket to that success, because I felt like a passenger in my own life watching it pass me by.

So three years ago I finally ditched the 9 to 5 grind, trading in the cubicle for the freedom lifestyle of being my own boss!

And boom, like that I was supposed to be rolling in the dough and happy as a clam, right?

Hellooooo universe! You owe me a fat wad of cash…and a big old dose of happiness.

If only it worked that way….

I was broke.

Living on fast food and close to giving up.

What were these uber successful entrepreneurs doing differently?

Did they have a secret strategy they weren’t sharing?

Then one day I stumbled across a business mentor by the name of James Wedmore. He was claiming that “success is created by mindset over strategy, magic over metrics, and attitude over action.”

Mindset, uhhh?

Magic, what?

Are you freaking kidding me?!

*eye roll*

What was this dude smoking???

And what the heck do these things have to do with building a successful business?

I mean magic?…come on.

It was a little out there for me, and I wasn’t prepared to start drinking the purple kool aid.

Well at least not at that moment…

So, I totally get it if you are doing a few virtual eye rolls right now.

I was right there with ya sista!

But…hear me out!

Magic and all, James was onto something and here’s why.

Do you ever catch yourself thinking, “if only I had more money, more time, more freedom…”

I feel ya real hard, and you aren’t alone.

I mean the lottery industry isn’t worth $73.5 billion, because people are loving their life.

Hell no!

They are chasing a dream of winning big so they can quit that dreaded job, take that dream vacation, or somehow make their life better.

Don’t agree…

How about shopping?

It isn’t coined “retail therapy” by accident!

Have you ever had a bad day and the only thing that made you happy was buying something new for yourself?

It’s called…

Filling. The. Void.

Instant gratification.

Masking our feelings.

Ya know… those good vibes you get when you buy that new shiny pair of shoes or fancy outfit.

Well… I hate to break it to you, while it feels great in the moment those feelings don’t last, my friend.

Which is why I spent over fifteen years jumping from job to job. I was chasing those good feelings I got every time I started a new position.

And it wasn’t until I invested in James’ coaching that I fully started to understand that Happiness and Success… are an INSIDE job!

Cheers to the purple kool aid!

But in all honesty, chasing the freedom lifestyle and hoping it will bring happiness, is a massive mistake I’ve made and I want to save you from making it too.

Want to know how? Let me tell ya friend…

1. Find Freedom in Everything You Do

I used to think that the only way I’d fully experience a lifestyle of freedom was if I was sitting under a palm tree.

Which made everything else I was doing not quite good enough.

It wasn’t until I was attending one of James’ Next Level retreats when one of the coaches asked me why I wasn’t happy yet with the business I was building.

Talk about tough love….

And a swift kick in the ass that I clearly needed.

I’d been SO focused on not having the ‘freedom’ I fully expected to get when I started my business, that I’d failed to see all the ways I could create a lifestyle of freedom for myself in the meantime.

Have you been there too?

The reality is, ‘freedom’ doesn’t have to always mean palm trees and margaritas.

While those are super awesome, the freedom lifestyle can be created in so many different ways!

This small little perspective shift has allowed me to fully embrace being an entrepreneur. It’s also raised awareness of where else in my business…and life I’m focusing on what I don’t have versus what I can create.

Here are a few examples of ways you can create freedom in everything that you do:

  • Carve out time everyday that is free from appointments, time to do something that gives you the freedom to just be…such as writing without purpose, taking photos, going for a walk, reading a book, or having a bath. Find things that allow you to explore, relax, and learn.
  • Outsource tasks that don’t light you up or make you feel heavy. Hire a VA, house cleaner, or bookkeeper. But free up your space and time to focus on the things that ignite creativity, passion, and purpose.
  • Travel is my jam! So I personally celebrate wins in my business with a vacation. After every launch, I travel somewhere either for a weekend or a massive getaway. This keeps me exploring, living, and spending quality time with those that matter most.

How can you start doing the same in your life and business?

2. Enjoy the Process

Live in the now.

Enjoy the present moment.

Just BE.

Shoot meeeeee now, I used to say!

That “feel good” shit wasn’t my cup of tea.

I was a mile a minute kinda gal and slowing down to enjoy the process wasn’t in my repertoire.

I was on a mission to achieve great success and no one was going to stop me.

Not even Deepak Chopra!

I was ticking off all the boxes.

You name it.

Believing that I needed to achieve these ‘things’ to experience the success I was chasing. But I soon realized that at the height of every achievement I didn’t feel any happier.

I’d spent years adding things to a list of achievements, but for what?

I was racing through life, striving for more, and never really stopping to enjoy the process.

Yikes…maybe these feel gooders were onto something!

But it makes sense. Don’t you think?

What’s the point of doing this work if you aren’t enjoying it?

If you aren’t happy now, achieving success in your business isn’t going to bring you happiness.

I promise you that.

Here are a couple of quick tricks I use to help me slow down, and enjoy the process:

  • Reflect or spend time debriefing after a launch, promotion, or event. This not only helps you SEE how amazing of a job you are doing, but it also gives you the time and space to enjoy what you are building and raises awareness of how far you’ve come.
  • Celebrate ALL wins…I don’t care how big or small, take the time to celebrate. And I will let you define the size of the win…but if I am keeping it real a win is a win my friend, so celebrate the shit out of them.
  • Practice gratitude for those who have helped you along the way! Don’t be an ass and forget that your team, family, and clients are part of the reason behind your success. Thank them often with thank you notes, gifts, and snail mail surprises. Who doesn’t love getting things in the mail?

3. Commit to the Long Game

You know that first class ticket I was chasing…well I hate to admit it, but building a successful business or lifestyle isn’t something that happens over night.

That’s a lesson I unfortunately learned the hard way, and something I want to help you avoid.

When I first started my business, I was trying to prove to myself and the world that I’d made the RIGHT decision to quit my high-paying corporate career to pursue full-time entrepreneurship.

I wanted the success I was seeing other entrepreneurs experiencing.

And I wanted it NOW!

Can you relate?

And I totally get it!

How often do we actually see behind the scenes of these successful entrepreneurs? We don’t see their…

Blood, sweat, and tears.

Not to mention the YEARS spent growing their businesses.

I found myself comparing my first year to someone else’s 10th year. And when things weren’t taking off like I thought they should, I was ready to pack it in and call it quits.

Sound familiar?

Well pity parties aren’t a great look, trust me! But I was damn good at them…

And it wasn’t until I started listening to How I Built This with Guy Raz a brilliant podcast showcasing how entrepreneurs, like James Dyson, built their business.

If you want a real dose of what business looks like, have a listen to that podcast.

No sugar coating BS.

No highlight reels.

It’s the real deal my friend!

And we all know who James Dyson is right?

I mean…you’d have to be livin’ under a rock if you didn’t!

On one of the podcasts he shares how he spent nearly five years to perfect the design, built more than 5,000 prototypes in his backyard shed, and was turned down by major vacuum brands before starting his own company.

So the next time you catch yourself whining about why your business isn’t growing fast enough remember the vacuum man.

Being committed to the long game is what is going to set you apart from struggling entrepreneurs. It’s what will help you take your business to the next level, and continue doing the work when things get tough.

And believe me things will get tough.

You’ll face failures, rejections, and shear meltdowns. And if you aren’t committed to the long game, you’ll end up giving up.

It’s that simple.

And I don’t want that for you. So here are some ways you can start committing to long game:

  • Create a big picture vision for your business…like 5 or 10 years down the road. Be BOLD and dream big, because this vision is the driving force behind everything that you do. It will keep you and your team on track when things get tough. It acts as a reminder of why you are doing what you are doing when that little voice in your head…aka Janice, starts chirping nasty things like…“who are you to be doing this“, “you aren’t good enough“, or “no one wants what you are selling.”
  • Don’t make this about YOU! Are you ready for some hard cold truth?…stop making everything about you and start making it about the lives you are impacting. And when you are hit with an obstacle, rejection, or rough patch, think of all the lives that won’t get your help if you quit!
  • Think of your business as one big experiment, and each task or goal as a way to learn instead of break down when things don’t go your way. Tantrums might work for toddlers, but they don’t work great for grown ass adults. So when we accept things won’t always go our way, we can focus on how to adjust and fix what we are doing to get them to go our way.
  • Detach yourself from the outcomes. Easier said than done. I know. But what has worked for me is setting specific goals and detailed strategies for achieving those goals. And if executed well, the results are ultimately out of my hands. It’s the stories I choose to tell myself after the fact that matter. Someone turning you down or not buying your stuff has more to do with them than it does with YOU. Don’t make a non-sale mean anything about your worth or value.

So friends, are you ready to stop the ‘chase’ for the freedom lifestyle? And get ready to search within for true happiness and abundance?

Can I get a hells ya…

Well, I’ll leave you with this… if you want to fully experience the joy of entrepreneurship and earn the money you desire, then it’s time to take a look on the INSIDE as our inner world is a mere reflection of our outer reality.

So I invite you to continue learning about how your thoughts play a massive role in achieving success.
